What Is T5 or T6 in Aluminium

Aluminium is a popular material used in various industries because of its durability, lightweight, and versatility. It is also known for its excellent corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity. However, aluminium is also known for its different temper designations, and the most common ones are T5 and T6. But what do these temper designations mean?

Temper designations in aluminium refer to the different heat treatment process used to improve aluminium's properties. T5 and T6 are both heat-treated processes, but they are different from each other. T5 is a thermally treated aluminium alloy that is artificially aged after being extruded or forged. This treatment is done to increase the hardness of the alloy and its strength. During the T5 process, the aluminium is quenched at a low temperature, then artificially aged to achieve the desired hardness.

On the other hand, T6 is a thermally treated and artificially aged aluminium alloy. This process is done to achieve the highest strength possible in aluminium. In the T6 process, the aluminium is heated to a high temperature, then quenched in water or air to cool it quickly. This is followed by artificially aging it to achieve the desired level of hardness.

The difference between T5 and T6 is the cooling process after heating. T6 requires a rapid cooling rate, while T5 does not. As a result, T6 produces a higher strength and hardness compared to T5. However, it comes at the expense of ductility and resistance to stress corrosion.

The use of T5 and T6 depends on the application's requirements and the specific alloy used. Some applications require high strength, while others require better machinability or corrosion resistance. T5 is often used in applications that require anodizing and good surface finish since it has superior machinability. T6 is used in high-stress applications such as aerospace, military, and heavy machinery because of its high strength.

In conclusion, T5 and T6 are heat-treated processes that improve the properties of aluminium alloys. T5 is artificially aged to increase hardness and strength, while T6 is thermally treated and artificially aged to achieve the highest strength possible. Their use depends on the application's requirements and the specific alloy used. Knowing the difference between the two is crucial since they have different properties and can affect the material's performance.
